EXTENSION OF THE VALIDITY OF THE ITALIAN DRIVING LICENSE
The holder of an Italian driving license residing in the consular district or residing therein for a period of at least 6 months may obtain from this Consular Office confirmation of the validity of an Italian driving license, expired no more than five years ago and not falling within the cases provided for in Article 119, paragraphs 2-bis and 4 of the Highway Code (Legislative Decree No. 285 of April 30, 1992).
Therefore, an extension of the expiration date of an Italian driving license may be requested:
1) exclusively by Italian citizens residing in the consular district of Kuwait – duly registered in A.I.R.E. or registered in the consular registers for which the A.I.R.E. registration procedure has been initiated – or residing in the consular district for a period of at least 6 months;
2) for driving licenses expired no more than 5 years ago;
3) for drivers not covered by the cases provided in Article 119, paragraphs 2-bis and 4 of the Highway Code (Legislative Decree No. 285 of April 30, 1992) (Drivers’ licenses suffering from diabetes or whose physical and mental fitness must be certified by appropriate medical commissions);
Please note that renewing the driving license at a consular office extends its expiration date. However, once the residency or domicile in Italy is regained, the driving license must be reconfirmed by the competent offices in Italy, even if the renewal made at the consular offices is still valid.
It is necessary to keep and subsequently produce the confirmation certificate together with the driving license.
Procedure for the renewal application:
1) Obtain, from the Forms section of this Website, the Form to be submitted to the competent doctor during the medical examination certifying fitness to drive, as well as provide a personal passport-sized photograph taken in accordance with the document requirements.
- For this purpose, the “Dar Al Shifa Hospital”, located in Hawally, is indicated;
- Please note that the cost of the medical examination, for the issuance of a medical certificate of fitness to drive, must be paid by the applicant directly to the doctor.
2) Schedule an appointment at the Consular Office.
3) At the appointment at the Consular Office, please present the following documents:
- The medical certificate;
- An Italian identification document (original) to be presented to the Consular Office staff and a copy thereof;
- The Kuwaiti Civil ID to be presented to the Consular Office staff and a copy thereof;
- The driving license for which confirmation of validity is requested and a copy thereof.
Confirmation of the validity of the Italian driving license is subject to a Consular fee, payable in cash at the appointment. The exact amount will be communicated when booking the appointment.
