On August 8, Italy commemorates the National Day of the Sacrifice of Italian Workers Around the World. This anniversary was established in 2001 to honor the memory of Italians who died at work within and outside Italy. It coincides with the commemoration of the mining accident in Marcinelle, Belgium, where 262 miners, including 136 Italians, lost their lives in the Bois du Cazier mine in 1956.
For the occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, addressed a message to Italians abroad.
